What’s the chatter all about?
Chatter is an initiative aimed at breaking a rule that we have been taught from young. Breaking a fear still instilled by society that you and everyone around acknowledges as a norm.
Initiating communication between strangers
This concept was conceptualised during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic where social distancing was implemented and enforced globally. Where we felt guilty for visiting loved ones be it family, friends or acquaintances. We felt removed from what it was to be human before as communication is a basic human attribute, Talking to strangers.
This got me thinking… We are still surrounded by people whether we know them or not. Each with their own set of fingers, toes and voice boxes. Why could we not just communicate with them? They had been living through the same time period, feeling similar stresses and possibly just as socially anxious or needy as myself. So why not start a conversation with your neighbour, the cashier, the person next to you in line at the supermarket, the security guard, a passerby or even a casual solo walker on the promenade.
In public spaces there have been ChatterBoxes installed. A Chatterbox consists of a 2m x 2m box on the ground with an ‘X’ in each corner to demarcate space for one another to still observe physical social distancing. On the ground, next to the Chatterbox is a sticker briefly inviting you and a stranger to partake in the social experiment.
As long as the initial interaction is respectful and friendly, why would someone decline a simple social interaction.
To encourage you to get out of your comfort zone, here are some things to keep in the back of your mind.
1. Each of you have no idea who the other person is, thus you walk into the conversation having no idea about each other’s past. A Baggage-less conversation. There is no reference for the other person to judge you on, whats the worst that can happen? The other person just keeps on walking by
2. One can always learn! Knowledge is infinite! In this simple interaction you can learn a fact either about a topic or about each other.
3. You can make someone else’s day by just talking. A satisfying free flowing conversation is easier than we think. This stranger you are interacting with has probably zero negative intentions and you’re approaching them with only positive, make the moment great!
So I encourage you to get out of your comfort zone, find a Chatterbox and engage with a stranger!
