When you’re training is centered around hypertrophy / muscle growth then The cold hard truth is that ice baths are not the most effective thing to do… in fact it’s detrimental.
There is an interesting study on this and I wanted to hate it and dismiss because honestly I didn’t want that to be true…but I couldn’t…
What they did is had participants workout then stick one leg into room temperature bucket of water and the other into an ice bath, had them drink a protein and carbohydrate concoction and based on blood and biopsies taken from each leg before and after they determined that the leg sum-merged in cold water had lower rates of *muscle protein synthesis…
And I think this is something we all innately knew. Similar reason to why you don’t want to get into the habit of taking anti-inflammatory’s after ever time you train because you’re inhibiting your bodys ability to do it’s job.
Now one thing I didn’t mention but it’s important to note, ice baths are completely different from other types of cold water training you see people do. Some of the 30 day cold shower challenges have been shown to have pretty much all of the benefits I’ve stated and don’t effect muscle growth but with that being said the benefits are going to be less then when you’re body is completely submerged in cold water.
The biggest benefit of ice baths is it gives some of the white fat in your body the properties of brown fat, simply stated you increase thermogenesis and will lose more body fat. Definitely falls into the biohacking category!
